The exhibition installation is organized by two concepts closely related to each other and to the exhibition material – the experimental works of György Kepes and Frank J. Malina with light.
The first is a freely accessible route, constructed on the principle of light refraction and reflection in the museum spaces, which also determined the placement of the installations and furniture. In the initial concept, the row of platforms, which was still thought to be almost continuous, would have been perceived by visitors as a row of images appearing as points of light in the dark spaces. In accordance with the needs of the exhibited works and the curatorial concept, the placement of the furniture and installation walls ultimately draws the line of the light beam reflected in the exhibition spaces. The open end walls of the furniture with illuminated interiors also strengthen this effect.
The colour concept of the rooms is a response to the different properties and lighting requirements of the works. The exhibition spaces have become part of a series of spaces that gradually darken, adapting to the works. From the light grey rooms of Kepes' photograms, visitors can reach the black rooms of Malina's luminous lumidyne images through increasingly darker painted spaces. The central room, which is a space of artistic connections, also realizes this light-dark transition within itself.
In keeping with the atmosphere of the darkening rooms, local lighting is used to illuminate the images everywhere. On the other hand, the documentation related to the exhibited works is placed in a windowed room illuminated by natural light, thus providing a pleasant environment for reading documents and books.
