How can we grasp something that we have not experienced? We cannot even really imagine what it might have been being dragged out of bed at night, put on a train with the whole family and finding oneselves in a sheep barn in the middle of nowhere. Not understanding anything and being harassed by senselessly hostile people in every moment. We can try to incorporate this simply into narrative buildings and exhibitions, but perhaps as architects we can do more.
As architects, we can create situations, spaces and relationships that help us to promote a deeper understanding of what is happening and, in support of the exhibition, we can also provide clues as to what we must never forget. What are the events that we have to face and the consequences of which we have to face from our past and do our best to handle our affairs in the narrower and broader sense in a smarter, more responsible and, above all, more humane way in our present and future.
