Analogous to the physical environment of the sales pavilions, the frontal form of sales at fairs, behind the counter, which preserved the operation of former grocery stores, has also become obsolete. The physical distance between the seller and the customer makes communication difficult, as well as the varied presentation and testing of goods. Storage within the pavilion requires constant loading and unloading.
To eliminate all these problems in communication, space use and environmental culture, we propose a radically different solution from the current one; both in terms of sales - and the related product presentation and storage methods - and in the design of the spatial environment. In this way, a uniform and modern environmental appearance can be ensured.
Instead of closed pavilion buildings, we see the solution in an open structure in which the spatial boundaries separating sellers and buyers are eliminated; their previously strictly separate spaces of use merge into each other, resulting in a more direct relationship between seller and buyer. The essence of the structure is not spatial demarcation, but the most direct display of products.
This open space use must of course be complemented by the covering of the shopping areas. This could also be solved by the box, but an independent roof structure can more fully realize the merging of the spaces by not only protecting the goods like a canopy, but also creating the same conditions as covering public spaces and pedestrian surfaces, making the approach more pleasant and protected. Instead of a cumbersome covering, a pneumatic structure that is more suitable for temporary use, easy and quickly installable, is the most suitable for this role.
