The architectural challenge posed by Kocka encompassed the characteristics of the entire party culture in Budapest. To find a good solution, we had to answer the question of how to open a non-ruin pub in Kazinczy, famous for its ruin pubs, without it sticking out or alienating people, but rather integrating into the most vibrant street in Pest,” said Alexa Zsolt, one of the managers of Minusplus, which handled the entire architectural project from design to construction.
Kocka is a place that fills a gap, as there are hardly any clubs of this profile in Budapest. This uniqueness is also reflected in the design of the building's exterior: slightly separated from the continuous jungle of houses on Kazinczy Street, the perfect geometric shape covered in elegant white tiles perfectly embodies the feeling of big city life. Another advantage of the white cladding is that VJs (visual jockeys) can take over the building at any time and “paint” the walls with special light in a matter of moments.
Although few people would think so, the building is over 100 years old. The architects kept the main walls, but demolished everything else. Thanks to this, Minusplus had great freedom in designing the interior spaces. The floors tailored to different needs allow for comfortable afternoon coffee, business dinners and night parties, all without the rooms overwhelming each other. This is largely due to the fact that the entire interior is characterized by clarity: this approach is reflected in the black steel staircase connecting the individual levels and the use of gray uncoated concrete. “We made all the lamps, tables, and bar counters here separately; this was the only way to ensure that the place coherently maintained its grand, yet not ostentatious interior,” added Alexa Zsolt.
The Kocka building is also equipped with the most innovative technical solutions. These include, for example, the temperature control system: the Kocka is connected to a ground probe device in a neighboring building, which allows the building to be tempered with surface heating and cooling.
